FACES Series
Faces are revealing. “A person’s history is writ upon the face”. I painted my mother asleep on the sofa - I call the painting “Roadmap of Life”. It is a heavy painting, not in weight, but then there is a weight there, just not in ounces and pounds. The spirit of a person comes through in the face. I don’t plan it. The feeling evolves in the face as happens in much of my work, that evolution. There are sometimes hidden parts that I have not noticed. I only notice when I’m not truly looking and then I see the different faces. We have many faces, those we show, those we know, those we hide, and the shadow faces we aren’t always aware of. The paint finds them and exposes them with compassion and knowledge from an unconscious place. I am a painter of nuance and abstraction. I paint flowers for eyes or other shapes and then sometimes I paint semblances of eyes, sometimes the face has no features. I like big lips, closed eyes, busty, hippy women - exaggeration of some kind. It is only when I have finished the painting that I see the mystery.
